Improve Your Mood With These 5 Self-Care Habits







No matter how naturally positive your disposition is, negative moods can happen to the best of us. We all enjoy being around positive and uplifting people, but when we’re feeling down it can be hard to be the most positive, inspiring version of ourselves. I don’t know about you, but I’m not one of those naturally “always happy” people, and I sometimes wish I could be more positive in my day-to-day life.

While the situations that can make us feel down aren’t always within our control, how we react to those situations is within our control. Let’s take a step back, and look at some simple ways we can increase feelings of positivity when we need it most. Here are five self-care habits you can implement to you can improve your mood.

1. Get Creative

Thanks to technology, we are constantly consuming information. The answer to just about any question we could have is right at our fingertips, and it can be easy to stay in consumption-only mode.

The issue is, when we are constantly taking in the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of others, it can be easy to lose touch with our own inner positivity. If you find consuming the content of others has you feeling down, take a step back to reconnect with your own creativity. Do some creative writing, try painting, or simply use your camera to creatively document the world around you. Allow yourself to get creative in a non-competitive environment with activities that bring you joy.




2. Unplug from Social Media

When was the last time you checked social media while in a bad mood, and logged off feeling better than you did when you started? Chances are, that doesn’t happen very often. When you’re feeling down, seeing everyone else’s social media highlight reel is probably the last thing that will make you feel better. Take a break from social media (even temporarily removing apps from your phone if you need to) and focus on building genuine connections with your loved ones. Call or make plans with a friend you haven’t talked to in awhile, spend some phone-free time with your significant other, or even have some quiet alone time where you can pursue your favorite activities.

3. Upgrade Your Space

There are few things more relaxing and uplifting than a clean, organized space. If you’re feeling uninspired at work or at home, take some time to update your environment. Decorate with a few small items that bring you joy, clear out any unnecessary clutter that makes your space feel less inviting, or organize your workspace so you can feel more focused and inspired.




4. Express Gratitude

When you’re really in need of a positivity boost, expressing gratitude is one of the most effective things you can do. Even when you’re in the thick of a tough situation, taking the time to journal or think about aspects of your life you are grateful for can help create a positive mind shift.

5. Take Care of Your Physical Health

If you truly want to feel like your best self, taking care of your physical health should be a key priority. When you get adequate sleep, move your body with regular exercise, and eat a diet of whole nourishing foods, you are putting your best foot forward to be able to handle anything life throws your way.  Exercise is an amazing stress reliever and energy booster.
